The “Château Borély”

Hi Everyone !

Today, I’m going to talk about a place: The “Chateau Borely”.The castle Borély is a castle situated in the south districts of Marseille ( 8th district):

In reality it is about an old country-house in the campaign, which was especially inhabited in the beautiful days. This castle was built in the XVIIIe century at the request of Louis Borély ( 1692-1768 ), a rich trader of Marseille.  It is implanted in the current park Borély:

It was sold to the city from the XIXe century and accommodated the museum of archaeology during several years (and until 1989). Vast building on 3 levels, it is composed by two detached houses, by a vast court and a gate on the back. The main building is richly decorated, in particular on the first floor, of a very beautiful egg-shaped chapel. The castle Borély which underwent a profound restoration between 2009 and 2013, is again opened to the public since June 15th, 2013. It is of use as case to the municipal museum of the Decorative arts.

Abbey “Saint Victor”

Hi Everyone !

Today, I’m going to talk about a place: The abbey “SaintVictor”. Saint Victor of Marseille (+ in 303 or 304) gave him his name. The abbey took a considerable importance for the bend of the first millennium by its brilliance in all Provence. One of his abbots, Guillaume de Grimoard, was elected a pope in 1362 under the name of Urbain V.

For more than 1 500 years, Saint Victor is one of the high places of the Catholicism in the South of France. The church always remains allocated to the cult. In 1968, the mayor of Marseille Gaston Defferre makes replace in the crypts of the abbey the rich collection of sarcophaguses:

These sarcophaguses were previously explained to the museum of the “chateau Borely”. This transfer makes of Saint Victor’s abbey the museum of Christian art of the first millennium the most mattering in Provence after that of Arles. The abbey is the object of a classification in conformance with ancient memorials by the list of 1840.

The “Major”

Hi Everyone !

Today, I’m going to talk about a cathedral: The “Major”. The cathedral “Sainte-Marie-Majeure”, often called the “Major” is the catholic cathedral of the archdiocese of Marseille.The Major company was built in neo-Byzantine style between 1852 and 1893 on the plans of the architect Léon Vaudoyer:

Situated in the district of Joliette in the 2nd district, it raises itself on an esplanade between the “Vieux Port” and the arbor of Joliette. Its architecture and its interior, marble design and porphyre, give him a particular aspect for a religious building. It set up as minor basilica by Léon XIII on January 24th, 1896. Near to the Major, there is the “Vieielle  Major” (On the right on this picture):

The ” Vieille Major” is built in the XIIe century in Romanic style.She must be destroyed to allow the construction of the new cathedral but, in front of protests, the choir and a span were preserved.

The “Dome”

Hi Everyone !

Today, I’m going to talk about a place: The “Dome”. The Dome of Marseille is the main theater of Marseille, situated on the esplanade Saint-Just in the district of the same name.Since 1994, the Dome became due to its setting-up and its structure, the major meeting of the diverse forms of shows in the South of France: Rock, varieties, ballet dance and contemporary, theater, funny shows.

The room can welcome from 1 200 to 8 500 spectators according to the configuration of the show. Its “coupole” calls reminds the hull of a turned boat and is supported by a arc of 27 m of height. The Dome can welcome also thanks to its flexible made capacity possible by cunning one games of curtains of capacity, the agreements of companies.Since its inauguration in 1994, the Dome welcomed on average 300 000 spectators by an1.

“La criée” Theater

Hi Everyone !

Today, I’m going to talk about a place: The “La criée” Theater. “La Criée” was the place where the fish was roughly sold on the “Vieux Port” of Marseille. We can read it the inscription ” Criée libre aux poissons” which means “Shouted free in fishes ” on the entrance of the building. Today, this building shelters a theater, the national Theater of Marseille, which has the status of national arts center for theater.

It was established in May, 1981 and is situated “30 quai de rive neuve” in Marseille:

It composed of two rooms of 800 and 250 places which were fitted out according to scenographic searches favoring the relationship spectators / actors thanks to the abolition of the traditional lowering between the scene and the room and by the implementation of certain technical subtleties:

Approximately 32 people are permanent employees, but the theater appeals in of numerous occasional during its creations.

The “Silo”

Hi Everyone !

Today, I’m going to talk about a place: The “Silo”. The Silo is an old industrial building of the city of Marseille:

What is a Silo?

It’s a reservoir where we preserve and store farm produces. The “Silo” of Marseille is an old grain silo builds in 1924. It’s a rectangular building of more than 16 000 square meters.

During 2000s, it was fitted out in two different volumes:

  • A space of offices
  • An auditorium (Theater and concert)

The new “Silo” was inaugurated in September, 2011 by the mayor of the city Jean-Claude Gaudin:

The “Silo” is in the style of the Italian-style Theater. It’s constituted by several balconies around a central orchestra. The room offers a total capacity of 2050 places. His configuration varies according to the type of show.
